New Art UpStairs Exhibit To Open

Art UpStairs, a gallery located in the second floor showroom of Bedford Hardware, will host an exhibit of area artists beginning Saturday, November 22, 2008.   The show features photographer Vickey Duncan; furniture maker Dave Jackson; painter Sandee Johnson; writer and carver P.J. Lowe; and sculptor Annis McCabe.

Vickey Duncan is a self-taught photographer who, in only two years of showing her work, has won a number of awards for her fine art photography. Her color photography captures the exquisite beauty of God's world, often found in her own backyard.

Dave Jackson is a local woodworker who has provided cabinetry, furniture and house restoration to the Bedford area for twenty-plus years. In his spare time he restores antique furniture and trains his bird dogs.

Artist and photographer, Sandee Shaffer Johnson has traveled as a photographer/journalist in over seventy countries, but now makes her home in Bedford. Her style and techniques are varied, but include acrylics, collage, watercolor, printmaking and pen and ink. She prefers mixed media work in both realistic/figurative pieces as well as abstract/loose forms. Her artwork can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Europe, the Orient, the Middle East and the Caribbean.

Annis McCabe has been a mainstay and patron of the arts in Bedford for many years, including a major role in initiating, organizing and operating the Sedalia Center as a cultural and educational institution. In addition to undergraduate and graduate work in Fine Arts, she has also taught at Lynchburg College and Randolph Macon Woman’s College. For the last two decades her personal work has focused on creating art, primarily sculptural, for liturgical spaces in various Virginia churches.

P. R. Lowe grew up in rural North Carolina and now resides in the mountains near the Blue Ridge Parkway of Virginia. Although Walking With Trees is the author's first published book, she has been writing since childhood, including short stories, essays and a completed book of poems. She has had poems published in small publications and recently an essay on NPR's web site, This I Believe. Currently she is working on a sequel to Walking With Trees, under the working title of “Deeper Into The Woods”. The art of Raccoon Magic is an offshoot of her woods walks, and preserves the natural in functional art.

In addition to the above, regularly featured artists on display include:
Rebecca Raybon, a photographer whose work captures the beauty of rural Virginia;
Gene Curd, who creates unique birdhouses, wooden games, and household accessories;
Marion Curd, who designs and sews a variety of handbags and other fabric items;
 Lanny Hodges, an artist whose works include painting, pottery and sculpture;
Larry Schmehl, II, who crafts toolboxes from fine hardwoods;
And Warner Scott, with photographs and drawings in a variety of formats.
